Alpha line up.

Right now the line up of tanks and vehicles for the alpha version of the game is being worked on. This version won't have the custom vehicle builder, but will be a chance to get people to play test the basic combat engine and get feedback on tactics and game play improvements that need to be made.

The first line up is for Vinland:
It's 1936 and military designs are not well advanced. The Vinland line up includes a couple of big tanks, these are not well armored and while robust and fairly reliable for the time, they have under powered guns and engines.

Some light tanks are a little better. Their smaller size allows for a little more armor and their small caliber guns have good penetration and rate of fire.

For artillery guns, they have a useful 60mm general purpose gun which makes a good antitank gun for the period. Just one of these will make quick work of any enemy tank, but they are heavy and not easily relocated. There is a short barreled 75mm support gun, not real artillery, but still powerful.

They have an experimental rocket system, less accurate and powerful than later systems, but still useful against massed enemy attacks.

For anti-air support there's a single 20mm AA cannon mounted on a truck, and for scouting and urban combat there are some armored cars (not shown here).

Next up is some of the incomplete Republican lineup:
When the Europeans and Vinlanders were planning the war it was expected that the Republican troops would have to make an amphibious landing. Preparations were made to spread the initial landings all along the coast line. Every truck, armored car and tank would be designed with amphibious capability in mind.

Later a treaty signed with the Amorican Celts meant that the attackers could be put ashore in the South and attack by land. Too late to redesign the thousands of vehicles assembled for the invasion, they were sent as they were.

The Republic is a vast country, stretching from Eastern France to Western Russia. They are ahead on technology and manufacturing, but they are also a country of contrasts. Some areas are quite urban and developed. Others are hopelessly backwards.

The country is not easily able to adjust to changing situations. When a plan is made, there's not much room for change. They will produce 1000 tanks of a design which is already obsolete before it hits the battlefield, and orders will be to attack with what they have, without waiting for better equipment.

But they do still have many skilled engineers and scientists, and unless Vinland is able to make some quick victories, they Republican equipment will inevitably advance more quickly, leaving the Vinlanders outnumbered and outgunned.

On the ground, technical knowledge is in short supply, as there aren't many literate Republicans. Breakdowns are common and many vehicles are abandoned simply because they can't be repaired. Still there are a seemingly endless supply of men and equipment flooding across the Atlantic and success in their Crusade seems assured.

The tanks above are based on the first tanks fielded in the War for Jerusalem. Called Pristis, or Whale, these big lumbering machines are already outdated. They will be supplemented in later missions by more advanced medium tanks and small tankettes.

The color scheme is Frankish Blue, and represents the fact that most of the vehicles are under control of the Franks.

Advice needed on tilesets...

I need some advice on which is the best way to handle building the dungeon. Right now I'm using prefabs for my dungeon, they have a north south east and west section for each "room": The basic tileset. This has several advantages, and also several disadvantages. Firstly I can have curved rooms, I can have tunnels and other interesting shapes. The tilesets can look quite nice with a little work. On the other hand I can't easily get the navigation data before building the map and once the map has been built I can't make changes to the layout, like having active pit traps or believable secret doors. Although the rooms are interesting, they are quite repetitive, and it takes a lot of effort to make even a few different variations. Also rooms are constrained to one size. A newer version of the tileset with a lot of variant parts for making more interesting rooms. To create a tile set is a real headache too. Planning how to lay out the UVs, trying to cra...

Upstairs / Downstairs.

I've decided to make my prefabs multilevel. Later this should allow me to add pit traps and other great stuff. It also makes it easier to line up stairs so that you can exit them on the same co-ordinates where you entered them. The prefab editor is pretty much finished, it just needs some code for loading up prefabs from a saved dictionary, so that they can be checked or edited. The entries will need to be forwards compatible, so I'll be loading each tile and then translating the indexes to a new array, that way if I add extra indexes or extra info (like traps or puzzles) I'll be able to update existing prefabs to work with the new standard. Video Diary 8

Things are moving along well, there's been a lot of progress on the action manager side of things. Actions have finally moved to the UI, so you can initiate actions by clicking the appropriate button. I've set up some dummy actions to show what happens visually when actions are taken, but the actual dice rolls and such are yet to be integrated. The UI objects are also being added, though some are non functional or empty at the moment. Click on the image to see this week's development video. Every time I add something big I also add about a dozen small things. Like the selection box visualization. Previously this was using render.drawline, and old fashioned Blender function which can be impossible to see at certain resolutions, or at certain frequencies. I replaced it with a function that adds planes of the right size and scale in the right location. I also made all characters a little bigger. I still need to do some work with vectors and final target locations t...
